Nostalgic Cheong Loy Rice Shop in Ipoh Old Town, Perak, Malaysia

These days, food goers prefer to dine at fancy and modern restaurants which equipped with air-conditioning but the problem is the food doesn't taste as good and unique as you hope for apart from concerning about the price.

When I traveled to Ipoh Old Town which is literally known for famous tin mining industry in the state of Perak in Malaysia during the 19th century, I was introduced to this affordable and nostalgic Cheong Loy Rice Shop. Cheong Loy Rice Shop has been operating for over 35 years and situated in the hidden and quiet lane behind Old Town Flats within Ipoh Old Town area.

Cheong Loy Rice Shop is located at the end lot of the quiet lane along Pasar Jalan Patrick within Ipoh Old Town. The quiet street was used to be occupied by food traders but they have moved to elsewhere. Thus, these lots are rented out as storage rooms. There are two shops by the corner, which are still operating as selling school bags, shoes and flip flops (slippers).

Cheong Loy Rice Shop opens during lunch hour between 12noon to 3pm daily. The restaurant begins to get crowded (packed) by 1pm thus, you need to wait patiently for the table seating and food to be served. Moreover the pricing is very reasonable where you can't find cheap and tasty Chinese food like this shop. We ordered some herbal drinks, stir-fry leeks with roasted pork, preserved sour vegetable and pork soup, Hakka pork belly slices with yam and a fried fish with sweet sour sauce and some steamed rice (white rice) for four people. At the end, we paid about RM51 (US$16). Don't you think it's extremely cheap?

Well, why don't you give yourself a try at Cheong Loy Rice Shop when you travel to Ipoh Old Town for a weekend trip. The restaurant might looks ruined down but I strongly believe that as long as the restaurant keeps clean and serving tasty food at reasonable pricing, it's worth the money to eat with friends and families.
